Применяется в американском варианте английского языка (от Deutsch = немецкий) наряду со словом German. В связи с тем, что значительную часть населения Пенсильвании в годы колонизации составили колонисты из Германии, слово в американском варианте английского языка не только сохранило оттенки и соответствующую фразеологию английского языка, но и образовало новые фразеологизмы (некоторые из них носят юмористический и слегка презрительный оттенок): It beats the Dutch (Поразительно!, Странно!), I'm a Dutchman if I do (Никогда в жизни!), It's all Dutch to me (Для меня это китайская грамота), be in Dutch (быть в беде), talk like a Dutch uncle ("командовать", "распоряжаться", говорить резко и свысока), Dutch feast (вечеринка, на которой хозяин напивается раньше гостей), Double-Dutch (двусмысленность) и некоторые другие.
